On July 26, Virginia-based Boar's Head Inc. recalled 200,000 pounds of liverwurst products and deli meats due to possible listeria contamination. This recall has now been expanded to include 7 million pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products, according to the announcement by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). Boar's Head Recalls Over 200,000 Pounds of Deli Meat Due to Listeria Risk The original recall included liverwurst and numerous other products such as beef salami, bologna, and Virginia ham. The expansion includes 71 more products produced between May 10 and July 29. These products have "sell by” dates ranging from July 29, 2024 through October 17, 2024 and bear establishment number “EST. 12612” or “P-12612” inside the USDA mark of inspection on the product labels. While the original recall included products sold solely in the U.S., this expansion includes poultry exported to the Cayman Islands, Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Panama. The recall is linked to a 13-state listeria outbreak tied to deli meat sliced at counters. So far, there have been 34 reports of illness, 33 hospitalizations, and two deaths in connection to the listeria outbreak, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Deli Meats Sold Nationwide Linked to Listeria Outbreak—Here’s What You Need to Know Consuming products contaminated with listeria could result in listeriosis, an infection that can cause serious illness in older adults, people with weakened immune systems, pregnant people, and newborns. Symptoms of listeriosis usually start within two weeks after eating contaminated food but may start as early as the same day or as late as 10 weeks after, per the CDC. Consumers who have purchased the recalled products are urged not to consume them and dispose of them immediately or return them to their place of purchase. Customers are also encouraged to thoroughly clean their refrigerators to prevent the bacteria from spreading.
