Check Your Pantry: Nationwide Candy Recall Has Been Upgraded Due to Salmonella Risk

In May, Palmer Candy Company recalled about three dozen of its white-coated confectionary items due to possible salmonella contamination. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently upgraded the recall to a Class I recall, which is considered its most severe.

Per the FDA, a Class I recall includes situations where there is a "reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death." The upgraded recall of the Palmer Candy Company products was initially reported by Consumer Affairs.

The recall includes products with white candy coatings, including pretzels, cookies, snack mixes, and more. The confectionary items were distributed nationwide in Walmart, HyVee, Target, Dollar General, and to wholesalers in Alabama, California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

While no illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this recall, the FDA is urging consumers to return any white-coated confectionary items manufactured by Palmer Candy Company to the place of purchase for a full refund.
