Unlike dogs, cats don't have as many clear-cut breeds. Currently, the Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA) recognizes 45 pedigreed cat breeds, compared to the 200 dog breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club. With that being said, you'll find no shortage of adorable cat breeds on the CFA's list, including some felines that stay small forever.

While cats are typically known for being small in stature, there are some breeds that can get quite big. The Maine Coon, Bengal, and Ragamuffin are just a few of the largest cat breeds. Domestic cats will often vary in size, but some are actually bred to remain small. Some small cat breeds remain around the 5 pound range, compared to the average 9 to 10 pounds of the typical house cat.

There are many reasons someone may desire a forever kitten—maybe they're working with limited square footage or they find the sheer cuteness of small cat breeds irresistible. No matter the reason, prospective cat parents should keep in mind that small cat breeds may include a genetic disposition to particular health problems in the future, so it's always a good idea to talk to your veterinarian before adopting a small cat breed.
