What You'll Need

Materials

  • Pumpkin templates
  • Keyhole saw
  • Scraper
  • Miniature saw
  • Awl, needle tool, or T-pin
  • Petroleum jelly

Instructions

  1. Hollow out your pumpkin:

Using a keyhole saw, cut a hole in the side or bottom of your pumpkin. Remove the flesh, pulp, and seeds with a plastic scraper or fleshing tool.

  2. Pick a design:

Print desired templates on 8½-by-11-inch paper and cut out around designs. Tape each shape on pumpkin in desired location.

  3. Transfer the template:

Take an awl, needle tool, or T-pin and use it to trace the design of your template onto your pumpkin by poking holes along it.

  4. Start carving:

Remove template, and carve along the pattern. Use a miniature saw to carve details into the surface of the pumpkin. Apply petroleum jelly to exposed areas of pumpkin's flesh to prevent them from turning brown.
