Career Highlights:

  • After getting her start as a stockbroker on Wall Street, Martha launched a catering business in 1976 from her Connecticut home, Turkey Hill, where she entertained, gardened, raised her daughter, Alexis, and grew into the mogul we know today. 

  • In 1982, Martha published her critically acclaimed book, Entertaining. To date, Martha has written and published an astounding 99 books on a variety of topics, including baking, homemaking, gardening, flowers, cooking, crafting, and more, and is currently working on her 100th book. 

  • In 1990, Martha launched the first issue of Martha Stewart Living, a monthly lifestyle magazine that published for 32 years; Martha Stewart Weddings followed a few years later. Martha became a household name when Martha Stewart Living TV premiered in 1992, a series that earned her multiple Emmys (a total of 19 over the course of her life, so far) and the James Beard Award for Outstanding Series, and was the first of many, from Potluck Dinner Party (starring her friend Snoop Dogg) to the Roku Channel’s Martha Gardens and Martha Cooks

  • In 1997, Martha expanded into the consumer product arena with bed, bath, and paint collections for KMart. In the years since, she has launched collections with a wide range of brands, including bedding, bath, cookware, and dinnerwear for Macy’s, footwear for Skechers, craft supplies at Michaels, CBD gummies for Canopy Growth, and meal delivery service Marley Spoon, amongst many other product categories that range from rugs and furniture to clothing and cookware. She currently sells her Martha by Martha Stewart housewares collection on Amazon.com.

  • On October 19, 1999, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia went public on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol MSO, making Martha the first self-made female billionaire in the U.S. 

  • In 2022, Martha opened her first restaurant, The Bedford in Las Vegas, and at the age of 81, made a splash on the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue in 2023.

Education

Martha attended Barnard College in Manhattan, where she earned a degree in European and architectural history in 1962.
