For sanitizing surfaces and cleaning hard-to-reach places, a steam cleaner is an excellent addition to your housekeeping tool kit. But before reaching for yours, check the label. As of July 18, Bissell is recalling over 3.2 million of its Steam Shot Handheld Shot Steamers due to burn hazards, according to an announcement issued by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

The recalled products include two models of the Bissell Steam Shot Handheld Shot Steamers: 39N7 and 2994. The products are sold in numerous colors (green, pink, blue, orange, white, black, purple, and red) and say "STEAM SHOT" or "POWER STEAMER" on the side. If you own a Bissell handheld steamer, check the label on the bottom of the unit to see if yours is an affected product.

The steamer was sold nationwide at Target, Walmart, and various other department and home goods stores, as well as online at Bissell, Amazon, and HSN. Products were available for purchase between August 2008 to May 2024. The steamers were also sold across Canada.

As the CPSC notes, Bissell has received 183 reports of hot water escaping the product, 157 of which led to burn injuries.

Consumers are advised to stop using the recalled steam cleaner immediately and can contact Bissell to receive a $60 credit to be used towards a bissell.com purchase or a $40 refund. If you determine that you have a recalled steamer, visit www.bissell.com/steamshotrecall to claim your credit or refund.
